I picked up this book free during an Amazon giveaway. With one horribly glaring exception, a sweet story and very readable. The exception is the prologue, in which a young Emma Rae is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes after a HYPOGLYCEMIC episode. The *only* reason a Type 1 diabetic would have too low blood sugar would be if he/she took too much insulin for what they had eaten. Since Emma was undiagnosed, she hadn't taken ANY insulin. Type 1 diabetics are typically diagnosed with extremely high blood sugars, in the 300s-600s and I've seen them as high as 1500s. (Not to mention, the supposed doctor attending her at home diagnosed her as diabetic based on this single episode without even checking her actual blood sugar.) This was such an egregious fact error that I almost threw the book down in disgust, and I had to take off a whole star. Come on, Bricker, if you are going to have medical events in the story, get them right! Spelling, grammar, and Kindle formatting were acceptable. The title was quite appropriate.

This book is the first in a series of four about Emma (the baker) and her menagerie of friends who own (Jackson) and operate a "one stop shopping" wedding boutique, located in the Roswell suburb of Atlanta, GA. Since I live in Atlanta, it was interesting to see local landmarks (some of which I am familiar with; others, I am not) woven into this love story about Emma and Jackson. Emma is a diabetic baker who just won a prestigious award for her specialty creme brulee cake and Jackson is a business tycoon who gave it all up to fulfill the dreams of his now-deceased wife. From the moment they meet, the frosting flies - and when Emma comes on board The Tanglewood (the name of the fictitious hotel) as head chef, bringing along her Goth assistant, Fee, the reader needs to hold on for the ride. Toss in Jackson's three interfering, but good-natured sisters, affectionately called "The Hens", a temperamental chef and his long-suffering assistant/girlfriend, and Emma's divorced (or are they?) and constantly battling parents - and you will find yourself laughing out loud at some of the antics of the characters. Sprinkled throughout the book are baking tips for cakes and other delectable delights - as well as recipes in case you want to try your hand at baking some of the goodies discussed in the book. These recipes and tips provide insights into the creative mind of an award winning baker.

For those of you "turned off" by Christian lit books, while there are spiritual lessons throughout the book, they are not "in your face" or "offensive". Both Emma and Jackson have events in their lives that make them question God and His place (if any) in their lives. Enter Miquel, Jackson's nephew-in-law who "just happens" to be a priest. His Christian counsel is subtle and convincing, but the author doesn't make the characters have an immediate conversion that is found in most Christian lit books I have read recently.

I enjoyed the book and am currently reading the second book in the series, ALWAYS A WEDDING PLANNER, NEVER A BRIDE, which introduces Emma's college roommate and best friend, Sherilyn, and her fiance, Andy, to the crazy cast of characters. Stay tuned...

These are books that are easy to read and not the mystery/murder/suspense filled books I also read! I thoroughly enjoyed the "Always the Baker, Never the Bride" and "Always the Wedding Planner, Never the Bride". Getting ready to read the third in this series, "Always the Designer, Never the Bride". These books are "light reading", funny, and you feel as though you know Emma Rae as you read this series. I hope Sandra will write additional books about Emma Rae - or other equally enjoyable characters! I got these three kindle books for $0.00 cost each from .
