I'm always appalled how religious zealots seek to eradicate all evidence of preceding belief systems and writings. Our history texts often gloss over how, for centuries, the Catholic Church expunged contradictory doctrines. Set during the Lutheran reformation, The Devil's Library offers plenty of intrigue along with a dose of religious history and medieval morals as the "Chief Censor in charge of the Vatican’s List of Forbidden Books" exerts extraordinary efforts to destroy a wealth of ancient philosophical texts. Nicely edited and fairly well proofed, with a sequel likely for the three resistance leaders.Tags : The Devil's Library - Kindle edition by Tom Pugh. The Devil Library edition by Tom Pugh Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Enjoyed it and the historical areas discussed through out. Would recommend if you like this period of history and the important writings and teachings. It does not leave the Pope's appointed leader with a good image rather one of obsession over beliefs.
Mr Pugh is not Dan Brown, and this book had a slow start ( I almost put it down in favor of a different book), but after the first part, it got better and was more engaging. This is a story set in the 1500's and if you like stories in which the Roman Catholic Church is the villain, you may enjoy this book.
I gave up reading this story about halfway through. I just lost interest in the main character's attempts to steal/collect forbidden manuscripts. Initially I liked it, but the plot seemed an endless one and after the umpteenth brush with death/prison it began to pall.
Want to feed your esoteric mind? This novel is not as erudite as the work of Umberto Eco, but the adventure of the freebooter and plague doctor chasing the lost writings of classical philosophers and astronomers in the larger conflict of humanism versus Catholicism makes for interesting reading.
A very interesting and well crafted historical thriller that brings a fresh perspective on the role of the Church and dissenters during the time of Sir Nicolas Bacon. Fast paced and thoughtfully plotted, the author captures and holds the reader's attention, making The Devil's Library one tough book to put down.
Ok and the writing was fine. I must admit that I originally thought this would be a book set in the present time period and that the start of the book was a flashback to put the story into perspective, but it was actually a story set in the 16th century. The beginning was somewhat muddled, but it settled down about a third of the way through and flowed evenly therefrom.
Ordinarily, I'm not big on "Conspiracy bases" historical fiction.. But The Devil's Library was a different sort of read. Setting the Inquisitional mind of the Catholic Church against the Lutheran reformation and a move toward science and enlightenment made for an entertaining story of people making tough choices in a time where the choice of doctrine could mean death.
That takes the library out of the equation as anything except a metaphor of knowledge and how it can be used for good-or evil.
Nicely done.
