This is a biographical tale for young people about growing up on a station in Australia. Mary had dogs including a bulldog which arrived as a tiny pup, but the love of her young life was Ajax, a golden half-dingo dog. She found him after a flood and brought him up as a fiercely loyal friend. The bush was a dangerous place with snakes, floods and other hazards, but Mary survived it and acquired more and more animals including a sickly calf. Her parents wanted to send her away to boarding school but the thought terrified her. The only other child she saw was an Aboriginal girl whose parents came and went; this girl was so taken by a doll on a bicycle that Mary gave it to her even though the girl was afraid of the clockwork and wouldn't wind it.
This was also released as Golden Dog.
The second story, which is more grown up, is Tam the Untamed about her wild white stallion which became the model for The Brumby. I have it in hardback and have never seen another copy. However to read more of Mary Pachett you just have to get The Brumby and Come Home, Brumby about a boy called Joey Meehan growing up on a station. There are others in this series but they are not so good. She also wrote Quarter Horse Boy, one of her finest, about an Aboriginal horse boy who falls in love with a golden Quarter Horse foal.
Another Australian author is Elyne Mitchell who mainly wrote horse stories - the Silver Brumby series is excellent - but also wrote Jinki, Dingo Of The Snows.
