3.5 STARSI was seduced by the idea of this book. Two gorgeous brothers, love triangle, angst, drama, tension and hot romance - these were all things I was expecting. After reading Every Which Way, the debut novel by Calia Read, I wasn't entirely disappointed and most of my expectations were met.
To be honest, the second half of the book really kept me going and is where the story came through and delivered.
The Sloan brothers played a number on me and they had me bouncing back and forth between sides like a ping pong ball. Sigh. I still don't know which side I'm on. As far as characters go, I believe this author did a good job developing the Sloan brothers, although I feel there is still some mystery lying beneath the surface. I empathized with both brothers and loved and hated them both at different points in the story. In this aspect, I appreciate that the author did not reveal everything about the Sloans and has left much to be unraveled or discovered. Both Macsen and Thayer delivered some swoon worthy and I want to punch them in the face moments.
The character of Severine was one I had a hard time connecting with. I didn't quite understand her voice or POV. Although I did feel her angst, heartbreak and the dilemmas she was dealing with.
Speaking of characters, there is a "mystery" character introduced and I'm on pins and needles wanting to know where this is going. I'm afraid, really.
The writing style and dialog was bit difficult with me and I found it made following the story and immersing myself with these characters a small challenge. I felt at times I was missing something, like I had skipped a critical part of the story which would help me understand, so I would go back re-read parts but find that I still didn't know what I was missing. The author had some really great things to say, but the flow of the story at times did not seem natural. I have no doubt that this skill will be honed. And my thoughts about writing style and character connection aside, I still couldn't put this book down.
When the Sloan brother's story continues with the next book of the series I hope more will come to light to make all the pieces of this puzzle come together. I'll be reaching for the sequel, no doubt. I am hooked enough to be in a bit of a spin waiting to see what happens next in this story and hoping that the heats gets turned up really high!
Bottom line, Every Which Way had all the ingredients and if you have to decide whether or not to get this book - do it, if only for Macsen and Thayer!!! I enjoyed them, or really I would like to "enjoy" them and I enjoyed the book. Give it a try!

I was introduced to this author with her most current series. A friend of mine insisted I needed to read her. I did and I was hooked. Once I finished the current series I had t read everything she had written and I started my journey backwards from current to oldest. This was the first book this author wrote and while it was defiantly different than her latest work. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am happily moving on to book 2 in this series.
In a nutshell, this book tells the story of Severine, an independent-thinking, take no BS college student who becomes involved in a love triangle with the Sloan brothers, Macsen and Thayer. Emotional chaos ensues.
I thought I would love this book, based on all the gushing 5-star reviews, but I did not. It was an "okay" book. It was a good story with some interesting plot points but, frankly, I was distracted from the story far too often by the odd word choices the author made to allow me to enjoy it. Sometimes I had to stop and re-read a sentence a couple of times and it still didn't make sense to me. For example, this sentence
When he moved, the abatement she needed placated through her body. (Read, Calia (2012-11-13). Every Which Way (Sloan Brothers) ( Locations 4798-4799). Calia Read. Edition.)
What? That doesn't even make sense. And that wasn't the only instance. On a more minor note, it also bugged me that Rennick was referred to as Severine's step-brother when he is clearly her half-brother. World of difference between the two words. There were also several conversations happening where it wasn't clear who was talking and several others where I knew who was talking but didn't know what the heck they were talking about.
Overall, I guess if you don't read too closely you could probably enjoy this book. I just wasn't feeling it and I really don't have any interest in reading any further books in this series.
