I really enjoyed this book. I found myself relating to the main character on multiple occasions but at the same time loved how Mont was the complete opposite and helped her to relax a bit. A good summer read for the end of summer! And some really sweet writing, too. I fell in love with these characters, especially Mont. I have it in my favorite book Collection in my app on my iPad mini.
While the story hits some familiar beats (yeah, I've seen the "girlfriend mistakes boyfriend being with Other Woman" trope a thousand times before) in this case, Elana Johnson pulls it off believably. You can *feel* their emotional investment because the romance is gradual, has fits and starts, and takes some time to develop. Everything that happens is strongly grounded in the characters' emotions, personalities and who they are and what their jobs are. I'm used to going into the bedroom with the characters I read - it's such the thing now, isn't it? - and while there is one bedroom scene, it's light, and it's mostly on an emotional level and nothing graphic. Instead, it feels intimate, like their thoughts about each other.
So, while the current price is kind of high for a romance novel (the only other writer I'd consider spending this much for is Mira Lynn Kelly) this one is SO worth it. So so so worth it.
I love food trucks, but haven't really thought about the work that goes into running one. Sophie's sounds amazing and I was salivating over tacos throughout the book. I was also longing to lounge on the beach with the ocean breezes tossing my hair while I ate that taco.
There was a simmering attraction between Sophie and Mont, yet they each had their secrets and reservations that held them back a bit. I loved watching them gradually peel those layers away, revealing strong and determined characters that a reader could relate to.
I was emotionally invested and really cared about how their story would end. I loved this story, with its slightly sad undertone and overall glimmers of hope and longing.
Content mild-moderate romance elements (steamy clean chemistry, with some innuendo and kissing; a fade-to-black scene that stayed clean)
UNTIL SUMMER ENDS was an enjoyable romance with plenty of chemistry between the characters. It was full of small-town charm, friendships, and some sizzling romance. Recommended to readers who enjoy adult contemporary romance.
I really loved Sophie and Mont! They were such interesting characters and very different from each other - bringing a nice balance to their relationship. Sophie is so focused on her taco shack and keeping her heart safe. Mont was much more laid-back while taking a break from the LA crowd and waiting to see if he could land a larger role in the film industry. There were so many swoon-worthy and rather humorous moments as well as sweet ones between these two. I also really enjoyed quite a lot of the dialogue between them.
The story was engaging the whole way through and, as a reader, I definitely felt the sparks and chemistry jumping off the page. There was also enough tension created by the characters' different dreams and goals as well as their past baggage to keep things from being too smooth. I would have liked the secondary characters to be better fleshed out and for it to have been cleaner, but that would be it.
In the end, was it what I wished for? This was a fun read! Plenty of sizzle without it taking over and allowing for some depth to the story. I loved the main characters and the very sweet ending.
Content Innuendo, one closed-door love scene, heavy making out.
Source Received a complimentary copy from the author, which did not affect my review in any way.
When Sophie desperately asks a complete stranger to help at her beachfront taco stand, she doesn't expect aspiring actor and balloon artist Mont to shake up her predictable life.
(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)
Plot and Setting 3.5 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes. A bit more complex than a standard boy-meets-girl, in good ways. Plot points in sub-plots are dropped or not resolved. A disproportionately large amount of time is given to the package from Clint, and we're left wondering why he sent it to her mom, what the letter said, and what his plane voucher was doing in there by mistake. Setting is clear and believable. I could picture Redwood Bay, and liked it. Timeline may be a bit hard to follow. It seems like they spend more time together before Spain than they actually do, and near the end we seem to have 2 Mondays in a row, then a slightly awkward leap a vague number of weeks.
Characters 4 -- Main characters are relatable, realistic, interesting, and dynamic. Both Sophie and Mont were burdened by a failed relationship in the months before they met, and have their own insecurities about their worth to the world--and they each experience positive growth in those areas, with help from the other. Some minor characters have depth, while others may be slightly stereotyped or simplified. Lucy and Blaine had definite strong points, with other minor characters less so. Definite strong points in the relationships between characters. Sophie and Mont each demonstrate willingness to sacrifice for the other, and Mont especially gives his all to get past rough points.
Mechanics and Writing 3.5 -- Scattered typos, punctuation issues, and word errors, and a few sections that felt confusing (mainly the driver at the airport bit). Needed a bit more polish in a few places, but as I read an ARC, those may be fixed in the published version. Good use of alternating POV. Generally skillful writing.
Redeeming Value 3.5 -- Incidental uplifting themes or lessons. Sophie (and also Mont and Lucy) learns to value love over personal plans and expectations, sacrificing and compromising to make relationships work. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, but some shaky ground, eg previous sexual relationships of main characters and their friends is hinted at, in a way that makes sex before marriage seem expected and normal. Sophie and Mont do indeed sleep together, though they do wait a while, and it happens "off-screen." Sexual attraction in their relationship in general is overemphasized.
Personal Enjoyment 3 -- I liked it. It was enjoyable and entertaining. I wouldn’t mind re-reading it someday, but it’s not a priority.
Great Read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
